Demystifying Communal Myths About Soft Teeth

Posted on 11/1/2023 by Kenneth D. Parrish, DMD, PhD
Image of a smiling woman in a dental chair, showing teeth up close. The majority of people believe that those with soft teeth need to see dentists more regularly than those with hard teeth. That could not be farther from the truth. As a matter of fact, there is no such thing as soft teeth. The mere thought that you have soft teeth does not make you immune to wear and tear even with the best dental practices. Here we hope to debunk some of the most common myths people hold as pure truth regarding soft teeth.

Soft teeth are genetic

The truth is that there are no soft teeth. This also means that soft teeth are not due to genetics. The enamel, which is the outer covering of the teeth, is the hardest material in the human body. It cannot be made soft by genetic makeup or any other factors such as lack of calcium. Calcium indeed makes the teeth stronger, however, other factors contribute to healthy teeth which include good oral hygiene, a balanced diet, regular dental checkups, and cleanings.

People with soft teeth are more susceptible to cavities

There is no doubt that some people could be more predisposed to cavities genetically. This, however, has nothing to do with how hard their teeth are. Tooth decay is due to bacterial overgrowth that erodes the enamel. The enamel shields the teeth from harm. When the enamel is eroded, the teeth are exposed to cavities and other forms of infections.

Tooth sensitivity points to soft teeth

Tooth sensitivity is a result of very many factors. Among the common causes of tooth sensitivity are; tooth decay, gum recession, enamel corrosion, and teeth grinding. If you notice signs of teeth sensitivity, it does not mean that you have soft teeth. It just highlights the need to see our dentist for checkups and examinations. Additionally, people have this misconception that people with soft teeth need braces. Braces become a necessity when there is teeth and jaw misalignment and not due to the hardness or softness of the teeth. Our doctors will guide you on the steps to follow to take care of your teeth efficiently. We accept walk-in clients as well.
