How Do Crowns Save My Teeth?

Posted on 10/31/2023 by Weo Admin

You may think that a crown is just for people who have had root canals, but crowns are used for all sorts of reasons. Here are some reasons dental practitioners use crowns to protect your teeth.

Tooth Decay

The most likely reason you may need a crown is to protect your tooth after a root canal. Root canals are used to treat an infected tooth. Teeth get infected by bacteria, which are always present in your mouth. The bacteria can eat holes in your tooth, and that's when cavities begin. If a cavity progresses, the infection can move into the middle of your tooth, where nerves and blood vessels are. The infection can be treated through a root canal. After a root canal is complete, dentists use crowns to cover and protect the tooth after it has been treated.

Cracked and Chipped Teeth

As adults approach midlife, their teeth- which have been through years of chewing and biting- may begin to show their age. One day, you may find yourself biting down on an almond and cracking or breaking your tooth. When your tooth is damaged or weakened, a crown can cover and protect it.

Discolored Teeth

When you look in the mirror, do all of your teeth look to be the same color, or do you have one tooth that sticks out because it is dark or discolored? If you have a tooth that is a different color, you may want to have it covered with a crown. Due to crowns being matched to the color of your other teeth, you'll be able to smile at the world with a tooth that is the same color as your other smiley teeth. No matter what you use crowns for, they are an important part of dental practice.
