A dental implant is a metal or ceramic post that we can surgically embed in the jawbone for permanent retention. The All-on-4® Treatment Concept uses between four and six implants that are placed through the denture and into the bone. In fact, this system uses implants that are designed to be longer, so that thicker bone is captured for a very firm, stable hold.
The All-on-4® Treatment Concept is a minimally invasive surgical procedure. We often do approve our older or medically fragile patients for surgery as long as they are able to heal appropriately. Being able to heal in a moderate amount of time is an important criteria. Patients who smoke, have uncontrolled diabetes, taking certain medications or are currently undergoing cancer treatment, may need to make some adjustments before surgery, we are happy to discuss this with your personal physician if needed.
Many implant procedures require a bone graft, but because of the length and placement of the implants, it is generally not required before the All-on-4 treatment. This includes patients who have already been wearing their dentures for years.
