Sedation Options
Louisville, KY

A woman utilizing sedation options at United Smile Centres in Louisville, KYAt United Smile Centres, we strive to provide a safe, comfortable, and even enjoyable experience. Unfortunately, we understand that certain people have fears or anxiety associated with professional dentistry. Some of these fears can even prevent people from receiving the treatment they need to maintain proper oral health. For this reason, we offer sedation options that help our patients relax during their appointment.

Sedation dentistry may be ideal for patients who:
•  Dread their appointment with a dentist
•  Have a low pain tolerance
•  Experience significant sensitivity issues with their teeth and gums
•  Possess a strong gag reflex
•  Have trouble sitting still in a dental chair
•  Need a significant amount of dental work

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas,” is perhaps the most common form of sedation dentistry. It is also one of the safest and most effective ways to alleviate anxiety or discomfort. The gas is administered through a special mask that fits over your nose during your procedure.

Nitrous oxide is a common choice because it takes effect and wears off within minutes. It is the only form of sedation that allows you to drive yourself home following a procedure. In many cases, nitrous oxide is used in conjunction with oral sedation.

Oral Sedation

Oral, or enteral sedation, typically comes in the form of a pill or liquid. Depending on the dose, oral sedation can produce minimal or moderate effects. This type of sedation allows you to feel drowsy or relaxed without losing consciousness.

Because oral sedation takes effect slowly, we usually ask you to take the pill an hour or so before your appointment. The most common medications include Diazepam, Triazolam, and Lorazepam. Many patients choose oral sedation due to easy administration, effectiveness, and lower costs.

IV Sedation

IV, or intravenous sedation, is a more serious method that provides a deeper state of sedation. As the name suggests, the sedative is administered through a vein to provide quick and effective results. This type of sedation places you in a “twilight” zone on the edge of consciousness.

Most people who undergo IV sedation have little or no memory of their procedure. Even in this deep state of sedation, you will still be awake and able to respond to stimulus. We typically reserve this type of sedation for lengthy or complex procedures, especially if you have severe anxiety that would otherwise prevent you from receiving treatment.

General Anesthesia

During general anesthesia, you are completely unconscious. This type of sedation typically requires the supervision of an anthologist during the procedure. For this reason, general anesthesia is reserved for special circumstances.

Safety and Sedation Dentistry

Before your procedure, we will review your medical history to determine if you are a suitable candidate for sedation dentistry. our doctors has received extensive training to safely and effectively administer dental sedation. Our office also follows specific guidelines set by the American Dental Association to ensure your safety.

If you are worried about safety, be sure to ask any questions and voice concerns. Above all else, your comfort, and peace of mind are our top priority. It is why we offer sedation dentistry in the first place!
