Frenectomy Procedure
Louisville, KY

Frenectomy procedure 1At United Smile Centres, we offer frenectomy procedures for adults to address a variety of oral health concerns. While commonly performed in children, many adults also benefit from a frenectomy to improve speech, reduce oral discomfort, enhance orthodontic stability, or even improve the fit of dentures. If a frenectomy is recommended, you can rest assured that we use cutting-edge technology and advanced techniques to ensure a comfortable and efficient procedure.

What are Tongue-Ties and Lip-Ties?

Tongue-tie: A lingual frenum is a band of soft tissue which connects the tongue to the floor of the mouth. A restrictive lingual frenum (tongue-tie) affects around 20% of the population and it can limit tongue movement, making it difficult to speak, eat, or maintain proper oral hygiene.

Lip-tie: Labial frenum is a band of soft tissue which connects the inside of the upper lip to the gum tissue above the front teeth. If too tight (lip-tie), it can contribute to gum recession, discomfort, or interfere with orthodontic treatment. Additionally it can cause difficulty with nursing, make it harder to brush the top teeth and can also lead to a gap in the teeth.

The tongue and lip are made up of a very complex group of muscles and are important for all oral functions. For this reason, having a tongue- or lip-tie can lead to nursing, feeding, dental, speech, sleep, or breathing problems. Problems can even persist into adulthood and can cause functional or aesthetic concerns, including speech difficulties, sleep issues, headaches, neck pain, shoulder pain, TMJ discomfort, orthodontic relapse, or problems with denture fit. A frenectomy removes or modifies the frenum to improve mobility and overall oral function.

Why Would an Adult Need a Frenectomy?

Adults may need a frenectomy for several reasons, including:
•  Tongue-Tie (Ankyloglossia): A restrictive lingual frenum can cause speech difficulties, difficulty swallowing, limited tongue mobility, and even jaw tension or TMJ pain.
•  Speech Impairments: Some speech impediments, particularly difficulty pronouncing certain sounds, may improve after a lingual frenectomy.
•  Gum Recession & Discomfort: A tight labial frenum can pull on the gum tissue, leading to recession, discomfort, and an increased risk of periodontal issues.
•  Orthodontic Stability: If the labial frenum is too tight, it can contribute to spacing issues or prevent teeth from staying in their corrected positions after braces. A frenectomy can help maintain long-term orthodontic results.
•  Denture Fit Issues: For adults with dentures, an excessively large or tight frenum can interfere with the fit and stability of their prosthetics. A frenectomy can improve comfort and functionality.

Lingual Frenectomy

•  A lingual frenectomy is recommended for adults experiencing tongue-tie symptoms. If you struggle with speech, eating, swallowing, or jaw tension due to restricted tongue movement, this procedure can significantly improve your quality of life. The procedure involves carefully releasing or removing the tight frenum to allow greater tongue mobility. Many patients experience immediate relief and enhanced function.
•  Pre and Post-op Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy is recommended for all patients undergoing lingual frenectomies.

Labial Frenectomy

A labial frenectomy is often performed to prevent gum recession, relieve discomfort, or assist with orthodontic treatment. If your frenum is pulling on your gum tissue or causing spacing issues with your teeth, a simple frenectomy can help protect your oral health and stabilize orthodontic results. Denture wearers may also benefit from a labial frenectomy if their frenum interferes with a secure and comfortable fit.

After a Frenectomy

Thanks to modern and minimally invasive techniques, frenectomy recovery is typically quick and comfortable. We will provide you with detailed post-operative care instructions to ensure optimal healing.
•  Mild swelling, soreness, or bruising may occur but should subside within a few days.
•  Over-the-counter pain medication can be used to manage any discomfort.
•  Proper aftercare, including prescribed stretches or exercises, is crucial to prevent premature tissue reattachment.
•  Follow-up appointments may be scheduled to monitor healing and ensure the best outcome.

If you have been experiencing tongue-tie symptoms, gum discomfort, speech difficulties, or denture instability, a frenectomy may provide lasting relief.
