Tips for Managing Bad Breath

Brush and Floss Thoroughly

Practice good oral hygiene by brushing your teeth gently twice per day and flossing once daily. Brushing and flossing removes plaque and food particles that cause bad breath. Be sure to brush the tongue, as bacteria on the tongue also cause odors.

Clean Between Teeth

If flossing is difficult, use interdental cleaners to remove debris between teeth that brushing misses. Products like floss picks, interdental brushes, and water flossers flush out bits of food to freshen your breath. Dentists can recommend the best interdental cleaner for your teeth.

Rinse With Mouthwash

An antiseptic mouthwash kills germs that contribute to bad breath. Swish for a few minutes to penetrate areas that your toothbrush cannot reach. Use mouthwash in addition to brushing and flossing, but not instead. Pick an alcohol-free brand if you have a dry mouth.

Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of water to produce the saliva needed for a clean, moist mouth. A dry mouth from dehydration allows smelly bacteria to thrive. Drinking water throughout the day washes away particles that cause odors. Limit caffeine and alcohol, which are dehydrating.

Clean Dentures and Retainers

If you wear dentures or retainers, clean them daily according to the instructions from your dentist. Bacteria and plaque collect on these appliances, contributing to bad breath. Soak and brush them thoroughly to keep them fresh.

Monitor Your Diet

Onions, garlic, and spicy foods are notorious for causing bad breath. If these foods bother you, avoid them or minimize portions. Drink green tea, chew sugar-free gum, or suck on citrus fruits after eating to mask odors.

See Your Dentist Regularly

Schedule regular dental cleanings and checkups. The dentist can detect periodontal disease, dry mouth, and other problems that cause bad breath. Professional cleanings also remove tartar, which leads to halitosis. Discuss any concerns with your dentist.

With a good oral hygiene routine and some dietary adjustments, you can feel confident your breath is fresh. Contact our office if you need help fighting persistent bad breath.
