The Role of Periodontal Treatment

Posted on 8/21/2023 by Kenneth D. Parrish, DMD, PhD
The Role of Periodontal TreatmentPeriodontitis affects the tooth root, the gums, and other tissues that help support the teeth. Treatment of periodontitis prevents its advancement, preventing tooth loss and other health complications. Below are some of the practices involved in periodontal treatment.

Determining the Severity of the Disease

This is the first step in treating periodontitis. The periodontist will inspect your gums and take measurements of the depth of the gum pockets. They might also take X-rays of the gums. They will recommend an appropriate treatment plan depending on the severity of the infection.

Tooth Scaling and Root Planing

Tooth scaling and tooth planing are the most common forms of non-surgical periodontal treatment. Scaling removes the build-up of bacteria and tartar that accelerates periodontitis. Root planing prevents further collection of bacteria at the root of the teeth and allows the gums to reattach to the teeth.

Periodontal Surgery

There are various surgical treatments for periodontitis, including bone grafts, flap surgery, and soft tissue grafts. Graft surgeries are done to replace destroyed gum and body tissues, and flap surgery reduces gum pockets. This aids in curating a stronger base for the teeth.

Maintaining a Good Oral Hygiene

Prevention is better than cure. In most cases, periodontitis is preventable if good oral hygiene is followed through consistently. This routine will help kill bacteria that cause periodontal infections and reinfections.

Periodontal Treatment on Overall Health

Periodontitis does not only affect dental health but also affects overall health. Studies have linked periodontitis and diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular, and respiratory disease. Periodontal treatment improves overall health concerning those issues.

Periodontal Treatment to One's Appearance

Periodontal treatment does not only work to restore health in a person. Dental issues like a bad smell, loose teeth, and swollen gums are a source of esteem issues for many people. Periodontal treatment restores the appearance of the dental cavity, enabling patients to feel more confident afterward.
