Why Are Gum Pockets So Important to Watch?
Posted on 3/20/2019 by Kenneth D. Parrish, DMD, PhD
Pockets in your pants are a good thing. They are a place to store all the junk you need throughout the day. Gum pockets are a different story. They are a place where problems with your oral health can start. The biggest problems that people face is that they do not know what gum pockets are, where they come from and why they need to pay attention to them. What Are They? The biggest problem that people have with watching gum pockets is that they do not know what they are or that they may have them in their mouth. Gum pockets are spaces between the teeth and gums. They are usually the result of tooth decay or gum disease. They can slow happen as the gums recede due to age. When bacteria are not removed from the teeth or gums, plaque forms. The plaque can eat away at both eh teeth and the gum tissue, leaving gaps. The best way to prevent gum pockets from forming is thorough good oral hygiene habits and professional cleaning. If they do form, it is important to pay attention to them. Why Pay Attention to Gum Pockets The pockets can cause more trouble for your oral health. They provide a space where bacteria can grow. Unlike the bacteria on the teeth and in between the teeth, the bacteria in the pockets are not easy to reach. That means it is harder for a person to remove the bacteria. As the bacteria grows, the risk of gum disease also grows. This leads to more problems with the oral health. Watching the gum pockets means cleaning the bacteria from them more often. Since it is not always possible to clean the bacteria from the pockets, a professional cleaning is often necessary. Another method to treat the pockets is through gum grafts. The most important thing to remember is that the gum pockets are signs of another problem with your oral health. Ignoring the pockets will only create more problems. Don't wait to find out about this or any other oral health issue. Contact our office today to schedule your next appointment....
